‘Gripped’ is a short animated film by Charlie Willis that aims to criticise the systems of power and control, and the effects humanity is having on its environment. It shows a globe being created. It is a utopian, virgin world that crumbles once aliens invade, expand and interfere. The story is influenced by our world.
By presenting an enticing narrative, Charlie wishes to make audiences reflect on their own lives and the way that we consume and use the world’s resources. The visual style for this film has been influenced by stop motion animations that use physical objects and materials. Real life textures are combined with digital animating techniques, to create an animation that could have been created in a physical space. Having developed my own visual style the animation is visually exciting; hopefully the film looks tactile and makes you want touch it. Fritz Lang’s science fiction film, Metropolis, loosely influenced certain signature scenes of animation.
